GUIDED VISIT TO THE CATHEDRAL OF SEVILLE

Catedral de Sevilla. Vista exterior

Would you like a guided visit of the Cathedral after your First steps in Seville

If you have checked out the city and you feel like a guided visit to the Cathedral is part of your plans, count on us. To get there you will have to wander through the intricate and picturesque old town, and the moment you come across it, you will look up and be totally amazed. It is imposing! It is indeed the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and it was in fact designed to astound anyone who looked at it.

You will be puzzled trying to understand if what you are seeing is really a Gothic cathedral; because you will see a sturdy stone construction and you will identify pinnacles, stained glass windows and arched doorways, but looking at another part of the building, especially its bell tower, you will no longer see stone but a construction of adobe brick, where the arches are poly-lobed, decorated with sebka cloths and continued by a wall with horseshoe arches that evokes an oriental touch. And the fact is that this cathedral was built on the same site that once had the largest aljama mosque that the city had in its Muslim period, and of which still remain its minaret and old courtyard of ablutions.

All this has to have an explanation, right?

To hear such an unusual story and discover its equally interesting and rare interior, we invite you to join us on our visit to the Cathedral of Seville, of which we give you some details below.

We will start by meeting in front of the main door of the Archbishop’s Palace in the “Plaza Virgen de los Reyes”. This entrance is called “Puerta del Lagarto” (the Lizard’s door). Do you know why Sevillians call it that way? This question along with other curiosities, will be revealed throughout the tour. We will enter directly to the Cathedral, since the tickets had been previously acquired.

Through this door we will access the interior of the building, where at first you will be forced to get used to the dim light of the interior in contrast to the strong light outside, and then, although it sounds contradictory, you will be completely dazzled by the grandeur of the interior, still unexpected even though you were already warned. Do you know how high this cathedral is?

Chapels

This will be the time to start the tour of its numerous chapels of which we will have access to the most significants.

These chapels are full of  magnificent objects that are used for the liturgy(mass service) and venerated by believers. These objects are very valuable for being authentic jewels of goldsmithery and also for being works of art of different disciplines.

And speaking of art, in this cathedral we have a painting of “Goya” and several works of another less known painter, but even more beloved by the Sevillians, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. By the way, maybe you already know the anecdote of what happened with his “San Antonio” painting…or you don’t?

Then maybe you don’t know in which part of the tour we will show you the largest altarpiece in Christendom, or what secret hides the tomb of Columbus, or why here is buried a king without guts.

Friends, this cathedral has centuries of history! Let us tell you the most interesting and the juiciest! As a bonus, there will be even more surprises when you contemplate the views of the city from the top of its bell tower, “La Giralda”, which access is included in your ticket  and you will be able to enjoy once the visit of the Cathedral is over.

We also look forward to seeing you on our guided visit of the Alcazar or in Seville at sunset.
